Abstract. The article actualizes the problem of studies of the interaction of cultures of Japan and the West and their conceptual foundations. The signs of Japanese culture in the context of its interaction with other cultures are revealed. Based on the research, the author substantiated the fundamental differences between Japanese culture and Western culture (introverted personality orientation, a weakened individual beginning, contemplation, an intuitive way of thinking as opposed to a rational-logical one, etc.), but also from other oriental cultures (the desire to create comprehensive syntheses, which is ensured by the assimilation of borrowings along the retardation path according to the principle of syncretization, which is expressed in the organic “increment” of the elements of other cultures). A harmonious combination of these features determines the specifics of the interaction of cultures of Japan and the West and its study.
