Abstarct. This article analyzes the specificity of perception of Russian literature of the 19th century by the heroes of the novel by V.V. Nabokov’s «Gift». It is proved that the central images of the work — Godunov-Cherdyntsev and Koncheev — occupy both opposite and close positions during the dispute. The very process of criticizing Russian writers of the 19th century by Godunov-Cherdyntsev and Koncheev is based on excessive detailing, which, in turn, casts doubt on the correctness of the positions voiced by the heroes. The chronotope of the novel is the reason for some incorrectness — the action of the work unfolds outside of Russia. Nabokov presented two opposing positions regarding Russian literature of the 19th century, both of which can be characterized as polemical in nature. The article may be of interest to everyone who is engaged in Russian literature of both the 19th and 20th centuries.
Keywords: Russian literature of the 19th century, polemics, detailing, criticism, emigration, dualism, esthetics.
